Trial Establishment and Progress
The trees were planted in Feb. 2010. We found out after the fact that late-season bud damage from frost had occurred in the Oregon nursery where the trees for all the project sites were grown. This damage resulted in a reduced number of buds that pushed on each tree. Therefore, in March 2011 trees in the Upright Fruiting Offshoot and Tall Spindle Axe training systems were pruned back to the trunk, and initial training on Kym Green Bush trees was started again. This produced far more shoots from which to select for training in 2011. For trees with healthy buds, training would typically begin in year 1.
