Tufted hairgrass is a native bunchgrass that is found in many parts of the western and northern US. It is an attractive ornamental grass. It is a cool-season grass in California

Originally, Molate fescue was planted in the whole 12 x 12 ft. plot. But it was learned that D. caespitosa would make an excellent lawn, so we removed half the Molate fescue and planted Tufted Hairgrass seeds October 21, 2010. However, probably because it was too late, seedlings did not grow, so we replanted January 22, 2011. Seedlings are starting to fill in by May.
